Honestly, probably because I was like 12 or 13 when I read the book and subsequently rented the VHS.
I think I remember the scene vaguely. The alien removes its mask and Walken is like "Except that's not it, is it? It's just another mask, like a Chinese puzzle box. Under that is another mask and so on... " or something like that.
