"Heroic surrender … is true in the self-destruction of a martyr. There is dignity in this will to be destroyed. It realizes the absolute dedication of a mundanely indifferent life to the transcendent truth grasped in that life." — Karl Jaspers

Christ showed what happens when you don't resist evil with violence — you are crucified by this infernal world. This non-violent path is impossible for a society, it is only possible for an individual who is ready to become a martyr for his faith in Transcendence. To each his own path.

"The Sermon on the Mount should be a mandatory requirement, but following that requirement will lead to the destruction of all. The respectful consistency in following the commandments of faith is visibly revealed to us in the martyrs and saints as something that cannot be in this world, except as its end. This is why theology becomes a work of composing compromises, reinterpretations, twists, to cover up the conflict between the requirements recognized, given in revelation, and one's own conduct not even approaching those requirements, and to make possible existence as duration and peace. Independent philosophizing appeals to honesty in order to either resolutely follow, or resolutely not follow the commandments." — Karl Jaspers

"To abstain from violence toward the violent is to become their accomplice." — Maurice Merleau-Ponty

"The only salvation is a world order based on the rule of law and possessing the power to preserve peace, by meeting every act of violence with superior force that robs it of all chance of success, and by punishing it as a crime." — Karl Jaspers
