interesting to see how the further east the more time people spend at work

in eastern europe due to communism there is still a lingering "heroic worker" idea and managers drive their workers to work stupid hours

and yes, lots of burnout happens, it happened to me in bulgaria working for a remote app support shop, owned and run by english people, bulgarian law allows employment contracts to have clauses saying that any extra hours are "summarised" or in other words, you don't get paid for extra hours if they decide not to

i was doing about 50 hours of which a big part was night shifts and i came undone, and one night just walked out in the middle of the night shift

Oh well that’s only for salaried people. They should include self-employed devvers and then the number goes up dramatically.
