They got machines that you can point and shoot and it tells you if it's gold/lead/silver etc.
They would be as common as the thing you scan your card with at the register if we were actually using gold like that.
But you'd have chains or rings instead of bars, you'd know the weight of the links in the chain or have lined marked on the rings to cut.
