Nostr doesn’t need algos or central lists to recommend clients and relays to new users. They will never hit the mark like recommendations from real friends.
Only two challenges i see to implement:
- getting new users “hooked up” with a Nostr friend (Follow and DM) on FIRST CLICK.
- presenting recommendations from their friend (and their friend’s follows) for best relays and clients (via NIPs 65 & 89).

Lists were one of the most underrated ways of avoiding algos and ads on Twitter.
Great not just for onboarding, also for organizing content.
They don’t have to be centralized. Make sure you check out nip 51 and listr.lol
Yes. User generated lists (NIP51) have lots of potential. Problem with NIP51 (at least for now & correct me if I’m mistaken) :
- no standard for indicating what any list should be used for… as new use cases (NIP) possibilities for user generated lists emerge how will clients know which lists to incorporate for each use case?
- little client support for user generated list for lack of use cases (see above)
- the content of these lists has to be curated by hand (for lack of client support) which means not many people will use them or keep them up to date.
I agree with you. nip-51 has good intentions, but it suffers from pre-mature optimization. You've got lists and their definitions. Then you have sets, which looks pretty much like lists as well. A lot of things going on here.
My interpretation is that kind 30000 is the closest thing to "here's a list of npubs, give it a name and do with it as you please"
I've tried using listr.lol, and it also makes a noble attempt at handling *all* of these types which can be overwhelming.
Twitter did it well. Super simple, create a list and add people to it and that’s it.
In terms of keeping them updated. Don’t underestimate the power of a few people maintaining lists of specific people and topics. I maintained my own lists simply because it made my everyday browsing experience easier. Bitcoiners, Philosophy, local news/sports, Musicians etc….
I think we could use NIP51 lists (from friend and friend’s follows) as additional source of data to help categorize “suggested follows”for new users. That’s a great idea. Thanks.
