Like any piece of media, in my opinion, it is multifaceted.

On the face level, it is about a presumably millennial girl with neglectful parents, Internet addiction, and undiagnosed mental illness (primarily caused by the other two), and her delusions, and struggle with mental health, and potentially suicidal thoughts.

On a spiritual level, it is about how the Internet (The Wired), electricity, & human spirit/consciousness are all interconnected and woven, how everything in the universe is an electrical signal communicating with one another, and how lain understands this, and transcends her physical existence to ascend to a newer consciousness, and connect herself with the world but in doing so she becomes a super position of heighten, & total existence, or complete annihilation.

Regardless, of what you take away from the anime I think the messaging is crucial to humanity, that world’s actions all interact with one another.

I’m sure there are other themes, & ideas that could extrapolated from it but that’s what I got out of it.

Though to be fair, I watched Mr. Robot first.
