In the Roman republic, taxes were levied on wealth and ranged from 1-3%

In Ancient Egypt, slavery and taxation were synonymous. Slaves were expected to surrender 20% of their income to the Pharoah.

So naturally the "land of the free" has much lower rates of taxation, at only around 50%
