I didn’t have any problems with it. It felt like it explores addiction and parasitism. It has a bit of social commentary around how kids are the ones who get fucked by people and their addictions. Paul is in AA, Marcus is a food addict, James is a crack head, Justine is an alcoholic, and Archer is addicted to anger and work. All of the adults have some sort of addictive behavior and Alex is fully a victim of that.

It also touches on the personal responsibility people need to take for their own kids. Archer eventually says, “I failed you” to his son but at first he wanted to blame Justine because she’s an easy target. This theme is further reinforced by Archer messing up the house he’s the project manager for: he gets red paint for the door symbolizing power, anger, the root chakra of physical survival when the owners wanted green which symbolizes emotional warmth, healing, and is the color of the heart(love) chakra. Also, he only has the exterior completed for the walkthrough so the interior is just a skeleton. He maintains outward appearances but fails in his intimate life. This fact reinforced by he and his wife only sharing ONE scene where she goes to work and he’s asleep in his son’s bed.

I could go on about each major character but you get the point.

There are so many little details in the plot and story that reinforce all of these subtle themes around addiction, boundaries, parasites etc. I was so impressed with the script and screenplay that I hope it gets some Oscar attention.

Definitely needs a rewatch. I can see how the parents look like addicts when under the spell. I’ll have to watch again and pay attention to what you suggest

I think it’ll be better on a second viewing

The really good ones always are. A good test is if it’s still scary or disturbing (whichever emotion you had the first viewing).

It might not be as scary but the pacing and excitement will still hold up

I didn’t find it that scary. Mostly shocking and disturbing

Idk man, when that whole sequence when the woman came out of the house with scissors and DIDNT kill Justine was quite frightening!

“I didn’t find it that scary” notice the that. Still scary though 😂

Some scenes were scary. Not most

🤣 key detail

😂😂

It felt like more of a crime thriller blended with horror

Exactly

I really love that combo. Like Long Legs or The Empty Man. I wish Long Legs had a deeper script/screenplay because I personally enjoy that style but there isn’t much substance to Long Legs.

The empty man…don’t know that one…

We reeeally love that one. Feels like an existential horror movie directed by David Fincher. It’s a different director but you’ll know what I mean when you watch it.

Looking forward to it
