When I created an account there was a popup asking to allow the app to get my health/motion data from the phone. I clicked allow. I also clicked allow for notifications. And everything synced immediately

Do you block syncing of motion data in your phone settings somehow?
Nah, it's now registering steps from when I installed, which is fine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
