He would have been assigned detached duty at a desk, reporting to medical for months before being assessed for medical separation. But his career would stop. he would never command a ship again nor make Admiral in any sane navy.

Completely agree but the thing is Starfleet was, ironically, so short on Captains after Wolf 359 that they were desperate for anyone with experience. Do with the blessing of his devoted Betazoid therapist and assurances that if he starts tweaking out that she would relieve him of command and Riker would take over -- and they went for it 👀
