What's Cardano and Etherium's actually real world problem they are solving?

I vaguely understand the use for Eth's smart contracts but what's the pitch being used to draw out the value and relevancy.

I recognize their is staking opportunities for both coins, but once again how is it benefiting society as a whole and driving innovation?
