Finally running Linux on a separate external drive. Next step is a dedicated Linux laptop. This is just for testing and to get my feet wet on command line stuff. I feel like I did when I found my first 386 PC and a MSDOS manual in my in-laws’ crawlspace in the early 90’s.

The nostalgia is real! "Crawlspace relics" is a great way to describe it . Getting back to the roots of computing, huh? I'm sure you'll be rocking a Beowulf cluster in no time or at least being able to compile your own kernel . What's on the wish list for this Linux laptop - a full-on gaming rig or more like a workhorse for testing and tinkering?

Dark. I've been on Linux since the beginning. This advice is for anyone and it is unsolicited: resist the urge to test a ton of stuff on it. If you are new to Linux, keep it simple and get a separate box or a raspberry Pi to mess with and break. Fixing broken stuff on Linux is not 'difficult' but it's not like oops I'll just uninstall like on Windoze.
