Do you know what a "tenth of an inch" is?

Are you sure?

The manufacturing floor has certain terms for the decimal places in dimensions; and they are not what you think they would be.

Let's take a look...

Given the decimals places behind a measurement given in inches say 0.123456" .

Each place has a slang term associated with it.

The first four places (1, 2, 3, 4) are associated with a thousandth of an inch, the fifth (5) is associated with a millionth of inch.

You can learn what to call each on the attached illustration.

Now, you know how to give measurements in a way that machinists understand.

If you call them a different name in your shop, please let me know in the comments!
