Should AI be regulated cuz it can be used to create explicit images of others without their permission? No. Here is why:
People can create whatever images they want to create, they already have this ability via imagination, paper and pencil, etc. It’s only a problem when someone uses those images to harass others. It’s a problem when someone tries to make those images someone else’s problem.
Our imagination and our tools for creating images aren’t the problem, harassment is.
For example, most humans have unwittingly created graphic images of others without their permission. Most humans do things like occasionally have a graphic dream about a colleague, etc. If that happens to you, are you a big creep? Of course not, you’re just human. Now if you walk into work the next day, stop by Bob’s desk and say “Good morning handsome, guess what you were doing in my dreams last night?” Then you are a big creep! And you are a big creep not because you have an active imagination, not because you created a image, but because you tried to make your imagination someone else’s problem. You were harassing someone.
So what if instead of just having a graphic dream, or sitting around day dreaming about someone, what if you actually drew a picture of them? Is that wrong? I think it’s a bad idea! Mostly cuz it’s going to be super embarrassing for you if anyone ever finds it. But wrong? Nah. Not wrong for as long as you never let those images be anyone else’s problem. They are your problem only.
AI is only a tool for drawing better pictures faster.
We already have all the regulations we need around these issues cuz there are already consequences in place for those who harass others. If we have issues here we should be thinking about how we handle harassment.
