If we go back far enough, all humans share common African ancestry. Lighter skin evolved due to environmental adaptations over tens of thousands of years in Eurasia, not as an indication of separate origins. The concept of "race" is more of a historical and sociopolitical construct than a strict biological division.
The thing is you can't insult somebody calling them subspeciest or varietist. US is set on calling everything by race. I don't think it will change.
I believe there are enough genetic, cultural, and physical differences between Europeans, and Africans that they should be classified as separate groups.
