My "solution" is to have separate profiles on desktop and phone.
If there's someone you really want to talk to on both devices, create a group chat that includes him and your phone and desktop profiles.

That would work but my issue with that is that every other messaging app I have is synchronized between phone and mobile. I like the portability of having it on my phone, but I always prefer to type everything out on my desktop, as I absolutely hate phone keyboards. Plus, it's not exactly viable to pack up your desktop and go somewhere in the event of a disaster or something else that causes you to flee where you have your PC set up.
While not ideal, what i'm saying works. My brother and I do it.
We have 1 group chat together with 4 profiles: 2 of them are our phone profiles, and 2 are our desktop profiles. That way, whether one or both of us are switching between phone and desktop, we never miss a message.
So if you wanted, you could just read the messages on your phone, but then type replies from your desktop.
It's an awkward workaround, but it works for my purposes.
