No. It’s that I want to spread my ideas and I want you, if you appreciate them, to contribute to further them

That’s not altruistic

Wasn’t talking about you 🤣 smh

The Nostr protocol is public domain, it was given to us all for free. And those working on it continue to give their ideas for free.

Most of Nostr infrastructure costs is paid for by relay operators for everyone to use without making a profit.

I think that’s a great foundation to build upon.

I think that’s true right now, at the beginning, while it’s being bootstrapped.

Like bitcoin, there has to be an incentive for running the network. If we can’t keep the lights on via ā€œtipsā€ then we will all charge a fee. Even a small one.

I think it can’t scale on altruism. The spirit is there right now, though, to be sure.

I’d say it depends. If Nostr depends on big relays that cost thousands of dollars to operate perhaps not.

But if it’s truly decentralized and there are thousands and thousands of relays all holding the network then it might hold just like Bitcoin nodes. This scenario is the best scenario but also one we will need to wait for it to play out.

For all the strides made to make running relays as easy as possible it still requires medium technical knowledge to run one successfully.

Right - skill, time and money. I’d be happy to have all my content free, but if I can’t do it myself, I’ll need to have people pay me for it. Otherwise I’ll find a free relay or pay for hosting.

Same as how websites work. Once they scale you need money. Anyone can host themselves on their own computers. Running it reliably is costly.

I think all clients are free to use!

Clients are nothing without relays

Don’t spread ā€œyuckā€

Love it

As long as you don’t say effective altruism.

That would make my statement false
