The rate of inventions that are dragged into the invention secrecy act has been steadily growing in recent years, which suggests the rate of development is growing too.

From 2023 to 2024 the rate of secrecy orders being imposed more than tripled. Not so much on the private individuals side of things though. I don't think it relates to a lack of interest, but maybe people are wising up to the fact that they won't get anything out if they try to patent it.

Eventually someone not looking to primarily or exclusively profit from it will release their work in an open source manner and "they" won't be able to impose a secrecy order on it.
