The type of engagement farming he’s describing is not necessarily new, but it’s gotten far worse and more prevalent there because it’s now incentivized via ad revenue sharing. Nostr fosters #V4V which incentivizes more authenticity in our content and engagement with each other.

X is cannabalising itself. Beautiful to see.
if people make content for engagement (pander to likes etc), then the content isn't really their own, it is just what they know people will click on.
💯 It boils down to incentives. Just like we saw people here spinning up bots to farm for zaps on Gm posts. If there’s enough incentive to do it, people will. On platforms like X and others that have ad revenue sharing, people are just incentivized to post whatever will get them enough followers/likes/etc to get those payouts. Authenticity is an afterthought, or even thrown completely out the window.
yeah
I can make things happen haikuing bitcoin but it's not me then. I kinda sorta become a 'like' bot making content for other people but it's not mine or authentic.
art as a commodity is what Andy Warhol was mocking with pop art.
now people buy pop art, think it's cool and they are unaware that they are buying something that AW was laughing at when he made it. he was memeing. 🤙
If the monetisation is not peer to peer then your not paying for quality as perceived by the end user.
You pay for engagement as valued by the advertiser.
💯 I imagine most people monetizing on platforms like that don’t understand that dynamic, or if they do they don’t stop to think about the affect it is having on them and their “art/content.” They see dollars going in their bank account and don’t care where it’s coming from.
Drives me nuts.
Complaining is another way to engagement farm lol.
What we have here is special.
Curious what it turns into at Twitter scale.
I’m curious too, but I’m also hopeful. Having my feed default to simply a chronological feed of people I follow, plus OPTIONAL algos that I can easily choose/create, goes a long way in keeping in better here. And even if a client somehow became “problematic” we can just switch to another that isn’t.
Didnt bitcointalkforums turn into something like this at some point? Like 2017?
👀
this is an argument against v4v and zaps if you didn't notice
I think the algo is the problem not the monetisation per se (on X). Some days my X feed turns to slop after a few scrolls. It's easier to use Grok to search and summarise happenings for me.
