Could relays offer search APIs for posts on their relays?
Or is something like Nostr.band the only real option?

I think nostr:npub18kzz4lkdtc5n729kvfunxuz287uvu9f64ywhjz43ra482t2y5sks0mx5sz already did this for nostr.wine I’m not aware of the clients that are using it, there can be layer 2 servers that can do this and clients can incorporate it, we are very early here.
There is NIP-50 for search directly on relays but only a few relays and clients support it.
