In 1990 Rembrandt’s painting was stolen along with 12 others from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and it was never found again.

Because of the high value of the paintings that were stolen (Rembrandt’s painting was one of the rarest and most valuable), the FBI launched an investigation in an attempt to find the criminals. They even offered a reward of $5 million dollars for any leads that might help them proceed.
