More options are good to prevent a centralized point of failure.
If we all rely on one service if that one service goes down then it becomes a chokehold.

I mean in all honesty, I think signal historically has been considered the best one.

I use signal for IRL friends, and family only since they'd probably have my phone number anyways.
For online strangers I used simpleX but now I don't know if anyone else is going to use it now 🙃.
Signal rolled out a feature to connect with others via a username last year which is a step in the right direction. Better for connecting with those you don't want to share your number with.
