My opinion is the debate is just ego-stroking over what the market will eventually decide anyway due to incentives, not arguments or ideologies. My opinion is that, for a while, the only thing you can control is what software you run; arguing is pointless. Incentives ultimately control which software becomes the standard. I won't pretend to know what the outcome will be like everyone else.
Yeah, but do even economic incentives, at least how they accumulate their cultural meaning, get influenced by arguments and ideology? If so, words matter and we have the burden of thinking for ourselves, however we too may be swayed by the winds of bias—our own included.
