I am new to social media. Correct me if I am wrong. I thought decentralization wants to be free of running algorithms and collecting users data like the web 2 apps. I do think certain level of moderation is needed though.

Those are different concepts. Decentralization in this case means that no single company controls the network.

Algorithm is step by step guide or set of rules that can help solve some problem ( recipes for example or instructions in manuals, but it can be almost anything)

As for collecting user data I don't think there is anything to be done to enforce not to as data is public and anyone can collect it. If you or me or anyone else decides to collect and store data they can query relays and store whatever comes back.

For me main point is that I have a choice what relays and clients to use and that gives me control over algorithms used to compose my feed. If I don't like it anymore I can switch to a different client or create my own client and no company can stop me. Second point is that no company can censor my notes or in limited manner - they could censor me on their relays or their client but not in other relays/clients that are out of their control.
