I didn’t know you had to have the right router. I’m thinking about a Cat8 for an Ethernet cord that goes outside, so this is good intel. 🔥🫡
Well, right now only business routers will support 40gbit throughput so cat8 is overkill for a home network. They are backwards compatible so it’s more of a future-proofing move.
Home routers go up to 10gbit ports max and most routers only have 1 of those ports. Sometimes 2. This means if you want your entire intranet to be at 10gbit you’d need a multi port switch with all ports at 10gbit. Luckily you can buy this and it’s not crazy expensive.
Then you also have to make sure your PC or whaver you connect has a 10gbit network card (most only have 1). You’d also need to upgrade those cards.
Lastly, if you have gigabit fiber, you’ll never get over 1gbit on the web (just limited to intranet transfers - good for home storage for example). You’d need 10gbit internet to get speeds that approach that limit. I don’t know what the availability of that is worldwide but they are rolling it out in Japan now.
So yeah, cat8 is overkill.
I recently upgraded to this monster and couldn’t be happier: https://rog.asus.com/networking/rog-rapture-gt-axe16000-model/
That’s a beast!
We're at cat 8 now? Crazy, what is their deal?
