Chicken N’ Dumpling Cowpeas

I got these from an elderly friend of mine last year who is now nearing his last few years of gardening. He’s been saving local heirloom seed varieties for years (grown organically, too) some dating back over 150 years & probably much earlier.

These cowpeas nearly went extinct before my friend saved them from the bottom of a chest freezer of a friend in Pomaria, SC. When he first planted them, only a few spindly plants came up as they were very old.

For years, no one has ever showed interest in saving his seed collection until we met each other. Thus, he gave me half of his seed collection! Hundreds of dollars of seeds & priceless to me as they were developed in my area

Last year, I harvested 3 quarts off just a few plants. They outcompeted the Bermuda grass like it was nothing. Ive never seen a food plant produce like this in my life.

This year I’m planning to plant hundreds of these seeds! I’ve also managed to save an okra variety & a butterbean. Trying to save a watermelon & green bean variety this year.

The resiliency in heirloom seeds cannot be understated. Go talk to the old folks before this stuff is gone and get to planting!
