I think the training and thought process behind math is useful. Like being able to think abstract, reduce a problem to its simplest form, making connections between different concepts are useful beyond mathematics itself

I'm not sure if he's considered a great programmer (probably not) but I like Peter Norvig's Design of Computer Programs .
