Truong My Lan, chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Holdings, has been sentenced to death by a Vietnamese court in a multibillion-dollar fraud case. She was convicted of embezzling $12 billion from Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank into shell companies and received additional 20-year sentences for bribery and violating lending regulations. Lan's husband, Eric Chu, was sentenced to nine years in prison for his alleged involvement.
