Lots of people would hate their government much less if the government did not have the power to create, manipulate, censor, sanction, debase, and extort money.

I do not advocate for any predetermined answer, and appreciate this can become a complex question.
The USA was based on separation of state and money. The USA became the most powerful nation in the world without having a federal income tax. Some people tried to Implement a federal income tax, but it kept getting shot down in the Supreme Court, so the not-so-progressives had to create the 16th Amendment in 1913 to force taxation on the people.
