i would like to think this way, but honestly i feel that people are married to their follower counts and egos. they don't want to put in the work to start over.

Privacy is not the reason I am using nostr.

Also, cohorts do not switch social networks. What happens is a new generation refuses to join their parents network and is FORCED to find alternative home.

nostr is competing for the post TikTok wave of teens, not 40+ year olds on Twitter.

i feel it's a little of both, a new generation wishing to use something different than their parents used and the old generation looking to try out new things.
