From an hardware hacker that was tech savy in the 80's, X is young users bullshit. This looks a bit more like the real world under the aesthetic layer made for the general public. I tried and closed my Twitter account 12 years ago because come on.. perhaps an irc made on a custom laser connected mesh parallel to the official internet... But here is acceptable for the moment. Can tell you that some older people are younger than the today young.
Yeah perhaps the older people do adapt with the innovative technology and trust in decentralisation process rather than the age old traditional way of communications. And still they find it fruitful..
The main concern is that choice is limited. With so much standardized tech we lost freedom. Tcp udp all the hardware is just on that. You are supposed to be free to implement protocols but the layers below stay the same. I like unstandardized stuff. We were doing subtones over FM radio carrier to send data to friends and nobody could spy us because they didn't even had the tech to decode what we where doing. A new infrastructure must be created.
