That's not true if you read the details of this exploit. In fact they actively market themselves as being "humane" because the exploitation only targets WhatsApp and is not a general device malware.

They send a PDF with a payload to a WhatsApp user and it corrupts the WhatsApp application giving them a backdoor.

If you are on an up to date version of Android with sandboxing this is an unusually limited exploit.
