From what I can tell, although the math gets squirrelly, the board grid doesn't fit on a sphere. (Euler characteristic something something).

This forces the abandonment of the grid markings all together which then introduces new problems about how to settle captures and count territory.

So the task here would be to somehow extract the essence of capturing and territory from the grid system in a way which could be applied to a sphere.
