Imam Ash-Shafi'i had memorized the Qur'an at 7 and then Imam Malik's Muwatta. And he had over 1 million narrations memorized, with the exact chains of transmission.

The same can be said about the 3 other Imams (more or less). Plus, they all wrote dozens of books, where they followed one (or more) methodologies, drew logical conclusions, and acted very responsibly because they were afraid of making mistakes.

The advantages of a civilization without screens, I assume.
