"One of the bigger mistakes I see homesteaders and vegetable gardeners make is not harvesting frequently. For instance, maybe a few green beans seem ready to harvest, but there's not enough of them to make a side dish for dinner...so you let those beans sit on the plant.

Unfortunately, not only are those unpicked beans likely to get tough and difficult to eat, but when you don't pick veggies when they are ready to be harvested, this sends a signal to the plant that it's time to stop growing. The plant now believes it's nearing its mission in life: to reproduce. It starts focusing on grwing seed, and slows down or stops its creation of food for humans.
