They do not have understanding of the game, afaik. As if they are unable to reason.
But there are specialized game engines ("AIs") that can play chess really well and they are often made to compete against each other.

I bet they could beat a regular person easily.
I have seen people try, but bot kept making silly or illegal moves. Admitedly, this was year or two ago.
