Aren't we just kicking the can down the road here?
I like lightning, but there is an entry barrier associated with it (running your own channel, typically 1 million sats minimum) which is prohibitive to the 3rd world. And lightning isn't without significant risk compare to on-chain. How many people have had force-closed channels? I grew up in Africa (as a white guy), I know what life there is like. We need to improve LN before it can be a feasible recommendation as the alternative.
I do believe that many of these innovations, call them what you like, should be pushed to secondary and tertiary layers, so as not to fuck with the primary layer, but we seem to be distracted with many arguments in the process, and the existing implementation are not without their issues.
My current position, which is of course subject to change, is that maintaining on-chain feasibility is crucial to maintaining Bitcoin in the long-term.
