This shank was made from cellophane wrappers, the clear ones from something like a bulk box of Zebra Cakes or similar snack cakes.

The "hair" texture I was seeing must be from twisting and melting.

You are correct, the color and striations are from the melting. I'd like to do more of these types of little contests, but I don't have a large supply of examples to use.
Maybe I'll have to whip some up in my garage using the same materials and methods.
