Telegram CEO Pavel Durov is held in France, he’s not allowed to leave the country, the allegations are that Telegram enabled criminal activities on its platform. He seems to authentically support freedom of speech and want to protect privacy. That’s why I don’t understand why Telegram by default is NOT encrypted.

The other important learning is: if you are running a censorship resistant platform then stay anonymous. That’s why protecting Satoshi Nakamoto‘s real identity is crucial.

The president of Signal Foundation is free and public. Why? Because no matter how much anyone tortures her, she literally cannot give over user data. Signal has robust end-to-end encryption. I don't know why Durov left Telegram open to censorship. He had the resources to secure it. Ignorance, greed, stupidity, blackmail. I can only speculate.
