Just got a message that I have 14 days left of nostr.wine - are all paid relays like this (have to keep paying to stay on)?
Discussion
This is the first one I know of that does this

Ok thanks! Bummer. I get the cost of their end, but don’t have time to keep track of 10+ subscriptions to keep renewing. At this point too it’s hard to even know what % of my experience comes from that particular relay. So can’t say wow I want to continue paying.
Only filter.nostr.wine, not the regular relay.
The filter is a public relay aggregator that also filters spam. You can see the list of relays that get aggregated here: https://nostr-wine.github.io/filter-relay/
It also can broadcast your notes to the same relays depending on the string you use to connect. This has a side benefit of reducing battery usage on mobile by reducing the number of connections you need to reach the same number of relays.
If I am remembering correctly, #[2] has said the recurring cost is because it costs a good bit more to run filter than the standard relay, which tracks with my understanding of how it works.
nostr.wine will continue to work even if you chose to not renew the filter part.
Great to know! Lol didn’t realize it but never even added the filter.nostr.wine…only nostr.wine.
Thank you again!!
NP. The team there has done amazing work. If you decide to try the filter, be sure to check that list and remove those relays. You’ll see a big difference in global, and in battery life.
Awesome! Will add and check it out. Happy to pay for the extra filter didn’t even know that was part of it. Thank you for explaining and for the team for all the hard work!! I know it’s not easy. Much appreciated
I think it’s only for filter.nostr.wine. However, I envision most paid relays to add a subscription model to remain sustainable. A one time admission fee will eventually not suffice as the flow of incoming admissions slows down.
Makes sense. I know it’s a lot of work/time/cost to maintain!
I got it today also. I don’t recall them mentioning that when I paid the fee. All well, maybe they did.
One of the comments on the post explained it well but it’s just the filter.nostr.wine that needs to be renewed!!
Lol I had never even added it. The nostr.wine relay will continue regardless if you pay or not :)
I think #[2] and team provide good value for fees, but I imagine they will lose greater than 75% of current filter users at that cost.
Subscription models usually start low and grow costs as subscribers plateau. I don’t see 10,000 sats as low but, I don’t know their operating costs, so maybe 10k/month is low 🤷♂️
Regardless, I think fee per note is the future of #nostr
Early days still.
I think you may greatly overestimate our number of filter users. It’s actually a fairly small % of total nostr.wine users and they are very passionate. By some of my guesses, almost 10% of our filter.nostr.wine users have already renewed tonight (in the last 2 hours).
I used filter.nostr.wine quite a bit when you launched but these days I use only my small single 🍊⚡️relay for my global. Helps me keep up with my 50 or so subscribers.
Certainly I don’t know your business data, but I do make my living understanding consumer behavior. I applaud 👏 you for innovating both on the relay tech and subscription model. Good luck 🍀
Thank you! For what it’s worth, if we do lose most of our users, at least we will be able to provide a worthwhile product to the ones that stick around. Without adding a subscription model to filter its unrivaled performance and features would die if we grew.
We’ll keep nostr.wine as open (one time fee and free to read) as we possibly can. We’ll also keep innovating and introducing new free relays like welcome.nostr.wine. We want to help grow nostr and keep contributing to this ecosystem.
