If I have to choose a quality that separates average from successful, I'll say that curiosity beats them all:

you can't go far enough if you're not inclined to search and learn for more.

I think it's also being willing to be wrong. It goes hand in hand with curiousity. Once you are willing to course correct on new information, you'll eventually get to the right place.
