I frankly don't use social media in my routine and I'm ok.

I use instant messaging, email, and occasionally lurk on twitter and watch youtube videos using some no-ads-frontend without signin in.

The question I want to brought to you is:

Do you really need social platforms? Are the problems with them (ads, algorithm, people exploited) caused by the over-reliance itself of people on social platforms? Does everyone could solve by themself this problems just avoiding to be so dependent on social networks?

I live without being signed on any platform basically and I use social-interaction as social network layer. I don't need nostr in my life, because I don't need something like twitter in the first place and so, I don't need a better fixed twitter.

If I accept to sign to some platform I agree with the terms of services (kinda); and if/when I don't agree anymore I just don't use it.

Social platforms are like metaphisical rooms, owned by someone. If you choose to enter accept their rule. If you don't agree find another room or build your own.

I love how nostr standardize the social-indexing layer. But I question if this layer is needed at all.

What do you think here? Whats your experience??

I've often wondered if we are at the end of social media entirely as a fad, that won't even be missed. I suppose the standard answer you are going to get here is that nostr-as-microblogging is only one form it can take. Nostr as a protocol can be for many things

...or something along those lines

I understand this and the protocol is cool, modern and easy to hack-with. Also the "smart-client / stupid-relays" paradigm is a revolutionary new way to think the entire internet in some ways.

But, in the end, does it risks to reinvent the wheel and being a n-layer protocol over the ones that we use today that adds complexity and doesnt solve problems?

Just asking, no FUD, if I'm here discussing is because I'm honest about this doubts and in search of opinions :)

I'm not really qualified to answer. But ask away:) hopefully someone more knowledgeable will reply

Also I'm literally disproving the fact that "I don't need to use social media" using nostr to send notes to try to have a conversation with people that I don't personally know from different geographic and political jurisdictions without asking permission to noone.

Hehe. I don't need social, hey friends on social, what do you think about what I said?

Humans are social creatures. Being social digitally or online allows us to be social with different groups of people. It's just an extension of our meat space lives in the online realm. And everyone's take and needs here are different. I can't answer what's right for you, but it's nice to have choices, right?

I am glad you disproved yourself so I don't have to.
