I've got to say it's one of my favourite features - it may not be perfect but it's frequently good enough to enable communication
The automatic translation sucks so bad that it mistook my Dutch for Afrikaans and turned it into a ridiculous word salad. Shame, because it renders the app absolutely useless.
"Renders the app useless"? What do you mean? You can't use Amethyst because of translations? That's weird.
I think selective translation is better than auto-translation. I am Persian and in most cases I have no problem with reading English notes, but sometimes I don't understand the meaning of a sentence. In such a situation, a translation button is very helpful.
