The authors present the Taoist understanding that conserving semen helps preserve Chi, enhancing vitality, health, and longevity:

While the body can produce semen continuously, the life force or Chi that is tied to its creation is limited. Frequent ejaculation is seen as depleting this finite energy reserve, leading to a decrease in overall vitality and health.

This perspective contrasts with Western medical understanding that generally views regular ejaculation as healthy and normal, possibly even beneficial.

There is a Chinese idiom that states “一滴精, 十滴血”, which translates to “a drop of semen is worth ten drops of blood.” This idiom reflects traditional Chinese beliefs about the preciousness of semen and its vital importance to health.

Makes sense. There’s potential life in there and it isn’t free to create. I was reading a book called Burn that talks about how our bodies are so well adapted to expending energy at a very efficient rate. That’s why our lifespans are so ridiculously long compared to other animals that use a lot of energy. We are so efficient at using energy that we can live off 1500 calories a day and still be generally productive. Other animals spend most of their days resting and still have a short lifespan. Cats live around 15 years even if they sleep all day. But ejaculation requires a lot of energy. My guess is that ejaculating a lot just makes you more lazy/fatigued but compulsively masturbating may raise cortisol which can lead to excess energy expenditure. In other words maybe it can shorten your life if you do it too much?

What am I reading lol
