Nope. In a decentralised protocol, it doesn’t make much sense—as it fluctuates wildly

Not so much, but some engagement is nice.

On other platforms I have paid attention but here the conversation and engagement has been such good quality that I don’t even find myself checking.

No, the only annoying thing is that I followed around 800 people, but now it only shows that I follow 600 and something. Also, I am finding notes from people whom I know I followed, but it currently shows that I don't follow them, even though I didn't unfollow them.

No because life isn't a popularity contest

Only follower quality counts.

The counts may vary depending on how a client caches it or if it fetches from various connected relays. I think what matters is who you follow to receive content from to learn stuff.
