Ah, Ive switched off amethyst filtering. Cos I think it uses reports from people you follow to hide those people from you. Not sure if this 'adopted blocklist' is still a thing, but it definitely used to be.
it still filters spam with filtering turned off.. the mysteries of amethysts coding, i should read it more

used to use it solely, usually a few times a day if not more
