it still blows my mind that nostr is just websockets.....

literally that's it. sure there is a standard / schema built for them (nips), but it is literally just websockets....

have we over-complicated engineering all this time?

Yeah it’s odd but beautiful, the standards that relays can implement is what’s been missing. A simple standardised set of rules is all it took to now being able to switch clients, no need to signup again and know I’m still working with the same data/connected to the same great minds. Let’s not forget TCP existed in the 70’s but it wasn’t until the early 90’s until we saw HTTP
