To follow up on last nights research.
It took me 4 books and a heap of internet searching and I’m still conflicted.
I am positive this is Horsetail weed.
But it seems it’s not super well studied.
We know it’s a decedent of one of the first trees on the planet that used to tower hundreds of feet plus.
Its root system is several feet deep and pulls heavy metals from the earth - of which; most notable is silica. Which is useful for many reasons.
What I am not sure of is still how to harvest it as there is conflicting information in my books and also on al the interwebs.
I’ve read that it grows in two stages. The first stage in a shoot that comes up that does not use photosynthesis to grow but relies on stored energy. These shoots then produce the equivalent of ‘fertil eggs’.
These shoots can be prepared like asparagus for consuming.
The later summer growth comes up and is used more in tea’s and powders or tinctures or other ways to extract the silica and other goodness.
I will be freeze-drying this batch until I’m more certain of preparation and timing of harvest.
Further to my thoughts in my quoted post. - It would be awesome to have community notes to reference.
Which would then be edited into a book or spreadsheet for quick referencing.
I think Im going to have to learn to be a dev/creator to start a project like this.
