I'm not huge on scifi books generally, but the original Dune is a masterpiece worth your time. Every book written by Frank Herbert is worth reading, although it gets weird.

The books written from his notes before his son and a co-author I can't remember were not nearly to the same caliber but entertaining enough if you wanted to dig deep into the key moments that set the stage for Dune.
