Press groups and civil society called the EMFA historic for protecting journalism, while some media industry voices and governments worried about overreach and sovereignty. It is mainly about protecting free speech: it strengthens editorial independence, makes media ownership more transparent, limits state or political interference, and restricts surveillance of journalists to rare, legally justified cases.
